Mitiga International Airport (MJI / HLLM)

Mitiga International Airport (MJI) is Tripoli's working airport and the busiest gateway in western Libya. It sits on the eastern side of the city, around 11 km from the centre — much closer in than most capital-city airports — and handles the great majority of international flights to and from Tripoli.

A common point of confusion: Tripoli International Airport (TIP), the city's original main airport to the south, has been closed since it was heavily damaged in 2014 and remains under reconstruction. Until it reopens, Mitiga is the airport you fly into when travelling to Tripoli — if your search shows 'Tripoli Mitiga' or the code MJI, that is the correct, operating airport.

Libyan carriers make up most of the traffic: Buraq Air and Libyan Wings are based here, with Berniq Airways, Afriqiyah Airways, Medsky Airways and Fly Oya also operating. The busiest international links are the short hops to Tunis and Istanbul, plus Cairo — the three hub cities that connect Tripoli to the rest of the world.
